What have you taken away from this unit? Do you have a deeper understanding and greater awareness of the Latin American? Can you see how their culture played an important role in their immigration to this country? How will you demonstrate your new-found knowledge?
Your final project will be to write and present a stage performance on the concepts/events of immigration and the culture of the Latin American. We will create a play that visits all avenues of immmigration: the historical events, the governement programs, the laws, the problems, the issues, the good, the bad, the ugly. . .
Lets show the audience what it was like to be a child uprooted from your home and ushered off to a place where you didn't even speak the language.
And let's not forget to include the treatment and poor working /living conditions fo the migrant workers.
Will our audience feel the desperation of the Guatemalan Mayans who were displaced from their homes in the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch, or of the campesinos in Nicaragua, Honduras, Columbia and many other Hispanic countries that sought the American dream when not only could their country not provide for them, but persecuted them, and robbed them of their land and dignity?
How can we deny the awesome cultural impact the Hispanic race has had on the United States! What caveats of culture will we include in our performance? The concept of family and religion? The unfaltering work ethic? The dual pride that resides within them - a mix of emotion for their new homes as well as their heritage? What about the delicious food?!
Are we savvy enough now to help our audience feel the fear of crossing the border? Can we get them to understand how difficult it is to obtain official documentation in Mexico and other countries, so the immigration can take place legally?
Can we then guide our audience - and ourselves - to imagine what this country would be like without "
